Single malt whiskey is made from malted barley at one distillery. It is distilled in pot stills, known for its distinct, complex flavors and then aged in wood barrels. In Scotland, the minimum aging is 3 years.

Blended whiskey is a mix of whiskies from multiple distilleries. For example, Johnnie Walker Black Label is a blend of whiskies from many distilleries, including Glenkinchie (Lowland), Cardhu (Speyside), Caol Ila (Islay), and Clynelish (Highland).
