Description

After years of heading up the prestigious family firm Quinta do Noval, Cristiano van Zeller acquired Quinta Vale D. Maria in 1996 with the ambition of producing his own wine. The ancient estate is blessed with around 10 hectares of fifty year old and older vines which he dedicated himself to recovering.

The Vinha da Francisca is a full bodied dry red wine with an enchanting nose full of sweet spices from the extended ageing in oak barrels and crushed dark fruit. On the palate there are concentrated flavors of dark cherries and blackberries which linger long on the tongue.

The wine takes its name from Francisca’s Vineyard which was planted in 2004 on the occasion of the 18th birthday of Cristiano’s daughter, Francisca. Amongst the traditional indigenous varieties planted on the site is Tinta Francisca which was first introduced in Portugal in 1756 at Quinta de Roriz, the estate owned by the van Zeller family up until 2009. The plot is also planted with Touriga Franca, Sousão, Rufete and Touriga Nacional which are used in this magnificent red blend.

Tasting Notes

This wine has a fine concentration, great structure, whilst still maintaining its finesse, characteristically present in this wine. It has nuances of mature red fruits, very pure together with smokey notes. It is mineral, with a creamy feel, whilst still maintaining freshness. A long and elegant finish shows us that this wine is ready to drink but will also age beautifully in bottle.

Food Pairing

The rich, succulent character of this bold red make it an ideal partner for roast lamb or beef and venison dishes.
