L'Hêtre is a very new winery, but its vineyards have a long history. For the last 10 years, Château Goubau was the dominant force in the region. However, when Jacques Thienpont visited the estate and discovered the wonders of the terroir, he and his sister Anne De Raeymaeker decided to buy it. Later they also bought the neighbouring Château La Montagne winery to create a large wine company in the heart of Bordeaux.

La Raison d'Hêtre Côtes de Castillon comes from young vineyards lying on plots on the lower slopes. These vines are planted on clay and limestone soils. Ecological agriculture is used and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. La Raison d'Hêtre Côtes de Castillon is an organic, barrel-aged red wine.

Tasting Notes

One third of the 2020 harvest has been used to make Raison d’Hêtre from 100% Merlot grapes which was aged half in barrels used for one wine and half in barrels used for two wines. This is a wine with lots of character and spice; it is peppery and fresh on the nose with a pretty attack of black fruit, mint and liquorice. On the palate the texture is quite creamy, with good volume and well-integrated tannins. The finish is quite long with a spicy, chocolatey flavour.
