Description

The estate and its 14 hectares of vines are located in the village of Neive, in the heart of the Barbaresco appellation. Aldo Pola, with the help of his wife Luisella and his children, continues the work started in 1969 by his father Franco. Their goal is to present the territory of Neive in the bottle. The estate has been modernized over the years in order to achieve the right balance between tradition and technology necessary to best preserve the characteristics of the wine. As everywhere in Piedmont, here the Nebbiolo is the king of grape varieties. The microclimate and the sun add to the terroir and make this DOCG the real protagonist of a territory where the Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis grape varieties are also well regarded.

The Barbera d'Alba cuvée is made from vines aged between 10 and 30 years. The flagship Barbera grape variety thrives here on limestone and sandy soils. The vines benefit from ideal sunshine with an easterly exposure. The grapes are selected at full maturity and then undergo a short maceration before being aged for several months in French oak barrels. Fontanabianco produces a Barbera d'Alba on the fruit, with a nice freshness maintaining a spicy and supple structure. This model cuvée of its appellation is certainly the best complexity at this price in Piedmont.

Tasting Notes

Fontanabianca has created an elegant and densely packed Barbera. It shows the exuberance and potential of the grape, yet with appropriate restraint. It is neither jammy nor too fruity but indulges with a fine dose of dried cherry, blackberry, and plum aromas, plus some Spanish cedar with a fine citrus note. A balanced drop with a beautiful final.

Food Pairing

Excellent with pasta with meat sauce, grilled or roast meats, pizza, antipasti, and cheeses.
