What is the best way to store wine?

Wine should be stored in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature, ideally between 8-18°C. Bottles should be stored on their sides to keep the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and allowing air to seep in. Humidity levels should be around 70%, and the storage area should be free from vibrations, strong odors, and direct sunlight, which can degrade the wine over time.

How long can I keep an opened bottle of wine?

  • Red wine : Can last 3-5 days when recorked and stored in a cool, dark place.
  • White and rosé wine : Can last 3-5 days in the refrigerator with a wine stopper.
  • Sparkling wine : Best consumed within 1-3 days after opening, as it loses its bubbles quickly.
  • Fortified wine (like Port or Sherry): Can last up to a month when stored in a cool place with the bottle tightly sealed.

What is the difference between Old World and New World wines?

The terms "Old World" and "New World" refer to the geographic origins and stylistic differences in wine:

  • Old World wines come from traditional wine-growing regions in the Middle East & Europe, such as Jordan, Lebanon, France, and Italy. These wines typically emphasize terroir (the characteristics imparted by the vineyard's environment) and are often more subtle, with higher acidity and lower alcohol content.
  • New World wines come from regions outside Europe, like the United States, Australia, South Africa, and South America. These wines often focus on bold fruit flavors, with higher alcohol content and a more pronounced taste profile.

What are tannins in wine, and how do they affect the taste?

Tannins are naturally occurring compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems, as well as in oak barrels used for aging wine. They contribute to the structure, texture, and aging potential of a wine. Tannins create a drying sensation in the mouth, often described as astringency. Red wines typically have higher tannin levels because they are fermented with their skins. Tannins also help preserve the wine, allowing it to age gracefully over time. Wines with high tannin content, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, tend to be more complex and can benefit from aging to soften their astringency.
